Testimonials
"Troy, I would like to thank you for providing your time to present to the Elders Trainee Program. The opportunity for them to be given insight into a world we rarely see and often without context carried a great message and grounding point for all of them. The conversations about your presentation and what you and your team had been through carried until the end of the week and I expect will continue through many conversations from here.
One of our new sessions involved discussing good day vs bad day, like my job – don’t like my job, toughen up or run away, is this career for you? The recall from all about your presentation and us defining a bad day, does not mean it is a bad job, was very effective. Again, thank you very much." Chris Howie- National Livestock Manager, Elders "I would like to thank Troy for the “humble and inspirational” presentation he delivered to a group of individuals who came away discussing “resilience, the importance of teamwork, attention to detail and taking responsibility”. The group were transfixed at hearing your detailed descriptions of the situations that you and your team endured and the perseverance and courage that was displayed by your unit. Your style of presentation was well received and your “casual” attitude to your own injuries along with your recovery was endearing. I would recommend Troy’s presentation to any group or individual who wishes to place some perspective around the different challenges we face daily, both in our work and our personal lives. It puts a new understanding to the phrase “a bit of a busy day at work”. It is a privilege for us that you are able to return to us and share your experiences for our own collective benefit. Thank you." Geoff Shipp- State Livestock Manager (WA), Elders "Over the last 12 months Troy has presented at two events for Boral Construction Materials & Cement. One in Western Australia and the other in Sydney. Both occasions were leadership presentations to middle and senior managers, from supervisors to managing directors. Troy’s presentations linked elements of SAS planning and leadership which were designed to motivate Inspirational Leadership Traits in the Boral business. Troy’s presentations were exceptionally well linked and very relevant, his mix of SAS life and normal worklife maintained everyone’s attention at all levels, and I know from the feedback that his presentations had a real impact on the audience, and they still refer to this today. Troy presents in a very humble yet confident manner that ensures he can relate to the audience at these workshops, and the mix of real life events towards the finish left everyone speechless. I would personally like to thank Troy for the work he has done so far as I am sure he will be back again soon and would recommend him to anyone." Wayne Manners- Executive General Manager (WA/NT), BORAL "In the course of my work I have interviewed many skilful soldiers. And I have met many adroit communicators. Only rarely do you find these attributes embodied in the same individual. The black art selection process for entry to Australia’s elite Special Air Service Regiment seeks thinkers as well as fighters. Again Troy embodies uniquely balanced skill sets. Meet and talk with him and you come away the better."
Chris Masters- Author and Journalist “I would like to express my gratitude to you for your presentation on leadership that you delivered to my crews recently. It was a captivating and compelling talk which had us all riveted.
Not only did you disseminate a wealth of knowledge on leadership, planning and event management but drew great comparisons between the SAS and our lines of business, really connecting with my guys. Your inspirational tale of the Battle of Khas Uruzgan and the odds you encountered had everyone transfixed. We are all glad you made it out alive so we were able to relive your story! Thanks once again.” Peter Knight- Operations Supervisor, Mt Barker, SA Power Networks "Thank you for your talk at the Boral Leaders day last week. Your presentation had me on the edge of my seat and the time flew by. I was particularly impressed to hear how the SAS planned operations in detail particularly the plan B’s for ‘actions on’.
I know my colleagues in IT all felt that you gave us a flash of stark perspective as our “battles” when systems go down are not as desperate a situation as we often allow ourselves to believe at the time. I googled the Khas Uruzgan battle and after reading the details am doubly impressed with your recovery and that you have managed to settle into civilian life. I imagine the journey is not as easy as many would expect. Thanks again." Kathleen Mackay, General Manager- Project Delivery, BORAL "It was a pleasure having Troy Simmonds as guest speaker during our annual Global Safety Appreciation Day 2015 and hearing his insights into Leadership under Fire.
At Hess, safety is our foremost priority and an integral part of our company culture. Our aim is “everyone, everywhere, every day, home safe”. Troy was able to prove to the audience that although the SAS and an Oil and Gas Company are vastly different in nature, they ultimately have the same goals in achieving mission success and ensuring the safety of its personnel. Troy’s leadership knowledge, skills and experiences which were hard earned through a long and successful career in the Australian Army and especially the Special Forces, gave our audience much to think about and consider in their own leadership styles and how they would react in a time of crisis. Troy was able to break down the sequence of events in the 2008 Battle of Khas Uruzgan and how his leadership under fire had to adapt to the unfolding events. He tied this theme into how we would react in our Emergency Management Team roles during a major accident event and gave the audience discussion points to consider. Troy’s presentation contributed to a successful day and his willingness to discuss his experiences and answer the questions asked of him by the audience left them with an experience they hold for a very long time." Joe Rogers- EHS Specialist, Hess Exploration Australia "Our group took a lot away from Troy’s real life explanation of life as an elite soldier what that means individually and collectively within that unit. He provided an insight to the mental preparation required to make it in this field and the audience had an awakening as to what is possible with the right mindset, training and unity. Overall the presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by all, with many take away points that I’m sure have inspired and challenged our thoughts and action as a result."
